ITC Programmes on Trade Talks

While most of ITC's work focuses on helping nations improve their ability to supply goods and services that are competitive in world markets, these programmes are designed specifically to help countries strengthen their national negotiating positions for WTO trade talks:

* World Tr@de Net is a set of national networks in 62 developing and transition economies to improve business advocacy on WTO issues. Members include business associations, governments, trade specialists, training institutions and universities. ITC supports them with events, materials and a web site to improve government-business dialogue and business participation in trade negotiations.

* Business for Development regional workshops bring business leaders and government negotiators together to debate issues that shape national negotiating positions and contribute to a business advocacy culture.

* JITAP, the Joint Integrated Technical Assistance Programme of ITC, UNCTAD and WTO, helps 16 African countries develop trade policy through interinstitutional committees, national reference centres and enquiry points on multilateral trade issues, as well as training and strategy development by sector.

* Market Access Map provides online customs tariffs and trade data of all WTO member countries, as well as most non-members. This information is scattered across many sources. Market Access Map brings it together, giving users an overview of market conditions and allowing negotiators to visualize alternative trade policy scenarios.

* The GATS Project provides insight into developing country service markets and implications to strengthen them through better use of the General Agreement on Trade in Services and more intensive national dialogue on trade in services.

* The GATS Consultation Kit is an online tool to help service firms, associations and trade support institutions to identify trade constraints, understand GATS scheduling and learn about GATS provisions.

* Standards and Quality Management programmes help countries benefit from their rights under the WTO Agreements on technical barriers to trade (TBT) and sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS) for market access.
