Innovative Approaches to Use of Technological Advances in Nursing Education

The "traditional" model of curricula instruction in which the faculty provides the knowledge through face-to-fact lectures with the students being somewhat passive recipients has changed significantly. The majority of today's younger students are computer literate; therefore, new styles of teaching and learning are rapidly developing. The transition from an on-site classroom teaching role to teaching online in nursing education has occurred rapidly during the past decade (Ali, Hodson-Carlton, & Ryan, 2002; Bothel, 2001; Mueller, 2002). The National League for Nursing (NLN) Board of Governors Position Statement Transforming Nursing Education states "nurse educators are expected to more effectively integrate technology into their teaching through the use of distance learning, simulation and PDAs to provide students with clinical experiences in diverse settings"(NLN, 2005).

This issue of The ABNF Journal showcases the innovative approaches used to develop courses for online delivery, and the utilization of technology in the clinical setting and classroom environment. The utilization of technology for nurses in practice settings is also featured in this issue. Through the leadership of Dr. Marcella Copes, dean of the Helene Ful School of Nursing at Coppin State University, graduate and undergraduate faculty utilize technology in all courses taught. Five nursing faculty were recipients of technology grants to develop and implement online delivery of courses. Such initiatives are made possible through outstanding training programs and support from the Office of Information Technology at the University.

Coppin State University is recognized as a leader among universities in the utilization of technology in higher education. The U.S. News and World Report (2005) ranks Coppin 19th nationwide for wireless access. The University website: www.coppin.edu lists other national awards the University has received in the area of technology.

It is imperative that quality training programs are designed and implemented to meet the needs and priorities of the faculty involved in the development and delivery of online education, and other technological modalities. …
