The Global Dump Soft Drinks campaign, spearheaded by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) to combat child obesity. The campaign, aimed at Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and other soft drink makers, calls on companies to stop marketing sugary beverages to children and selling sports drinks and fruit-flavored drinks in schools. "These beverages are liquid candy," says Jeff Cronin, a CSPI spokesman. "Kids could drink water, low-fat milk, or 100 percent fruit juice instead." Backed by consumer groups in 20 countries, the campaign is also pushing to end aggressive marketing in lower-income countries. In Mexico, for example, Coca-Cola has a school nutrition campaign portraying Coke as a drink for hydration after physical activity. "Coca-Cola and Pepsi want to meet with us," says Cronin. "We're optimistic."

EcoEnvelopes, for creating the first reusable envelope to receive a national customer ruling from the U.S. Postal Service. Made with paper from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative with a minimum of 30 percent postconsumer recycled content, ecoEnvelopes eliminate separate reply envelopes. Recipients open the envelope by removing a perforated strip; to mail back a bill or other materials, they put the reply in the same envelope so the address is readable through the window, then seal it like a traditional envelope. Every million ecoEnvelopes used will save an estimated 250 million BTUs of energy and 37,000 pounds or greenhouse gases. The envelopes are compatible with current high-speed insertion and postal equipment.

Lance Armstrong, for making if easier to commute by bicycle in Austin, Tex. Armstrong's new bike shop, Mellow Johnny's, is set to open this month. Located a block from a bike path that will run through downtown, the shop will encourage people to bike to work by offering showers, a locker room, and daytime bike storage. Armstrong is also working with Austin to create more bike lanes and to ensure that bicycle commuting is safe. The Tour de France champion wants Mellow Johnny's to be especially welcoming to new cyclists, so it will sell a wide variety of bicycles and feature counter space for viewing bike mechanics at work. …
