Having entered my 85th year and after nearly seven decades of living in and writing about the world of music and musicians I look back on my editorship of Musical Opinion with both affection and pride in helping to bring my own experience to an international readership of a revered journal as it made it's way into the 2 1st century.

I have been fortunate in having spent most of my professional life attached to music magazines. In 195 1 during the Festival of Britain I was asked to join the inaugural team of Music & Musicians which was the first post war music magazine and four decades later was able to become part of what must be one of the oldest surviving examples of the genre. Most important has been the exciting developments of both composition and performance during these recent years. The experiment of electronic composition, which caused considerable attention during the 20th century has now matured into sounds which continue to hurt the ears of the conventional music lover while giving much nourishment to the creativity of new generations of musicians who are taking it into every sphere of the arts. …
