The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the context, theory and practice of neoliberal public policy and objections to it. The publication was drawn from a symposium series, 'Critical Perspectives on Canadian Public Policy: Restructuring and Resistance', organised by the editors of the book for the annual Meeting of the Society for Socialist Studies, University of Ottawa in 1998. Seventeen noted academics from university departments across Canada contributed to the volume. The first part of the book considers neoliberal restructuring in the context of global capitalism and examines the changing place of the nation state, labour market, policy formulation and federalism. Part two considers principal areas of policy restructuring, for example healthcare and education, human rights and communication. From the obvious socialist perspective of the authors, the concluding section considers the potency of political strategies of resistance and fresh challenges created by global capitalist restructuring. …
