Students Lead the Way in Celebrating School Psychology Awareness Week

Have you marked your calendars yet? School Psychology Awareness Week (SPAW) is just around the corner! Each November, NASP sets aside one week for students and practitioners alike to celebrate, network, and promote the field of school psychology in their schools, colleges, and communities. This year School Psychology Awareness Week will occur during the week of November 12th through the 16th with the theme: "Know Your Strengths. Discover Them. Share Them. Celebrate Them." What better way to celebrate this year's theme than by sharing your strengths with your community and by advocating for students to achieve their best by focusing on their strengths and resiliency? Now is a great time to start planning with your fellow students and school psychology colleagues about different ways you can help organize school psychology related events. In order to assist you in developing successful advocacy activities and events for School Psychology Awareness Week 2012, this article provides several examples of what amazing Student Leaders were able to achieve during SPAW 2011. SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY AWARENESS WEEK ACTIVITIES 2011

Last year's theme, "Every Link Matters, Make the Connection" focused on how school psychologists can encourage students to create positive connections within their school community, their academics, and their lives. We received many exceptional examples from student leaders who demonstrated how they were able to make connections with other students, faculty, practitioners, and community members to celebrate School Psychology Awareness Week- ultimately raising awareness of the field of school psychology and NASP.

Outlined below are only a few of the many outstanding submissions we received from Student Leaders across the country that were posted on the Student Leaders Communities page. These examples highlight the hard work, advocacy, and strengths that are shared by many NASP members and that helped make School Psychology Awareness Week 2011 a huge success. We hope they will inspire more great activities during 2012.

University of Southern Florida

Student Leader: Sarah Fefer, MA

Recipient of the School Psychology Awareness Week Award

For the second straight year, USF demonstrated its enthusiasm for the field of school psychology. To celebrate School Psychology Awareness Week, students at USF visited undergraduate classes to discuss RTI and the field of school psychology, and answered questions from students interested in enrolling in a school psychology program. Faculty and students from USF also visited local high schools and practicum sites to provide students information about how school psychologists serve their school community, and shared materials with students about practicing gratitude as part of the Great American Teach-in. In addition, students advocated for important educational and mental health services by sending messages to their elected officials through the NASP Advocacy Center, posted links to NASP resources on their Facebook accounts, and created a special SPAW newsletter that was distributed throughout their college of education.

Humboldt State University

Student Leaden Katelynn Meng, MA

Recipient of the School Psychology Awareness Award

Students at Humboldt University celebrated School Psychology Awareness Week by setting up informational booths in their university quads and distributing brochures about the field of school psychology. They created a poster that was displayed throughout their university to advertise two informational nights about school psychology, attracting more than 50 people. Lastly, students and faculty from the Humboldt program visited seven different undergraduate classes to inform them about school psychology and their school psychology program.
