A heated dispute over a proposed performance management regime reaches a head this week with unionised academics at Queen Mary, University of London holding a one-day strike on 22 November.

The regime, already piloted in the institution's Faculty of Science and Engineering, assesses academics against a series of metrics relating to teaching scores and research output and income.

The metrics are similar to those used during restructuring exercises at two Queen Mary schools earlier this year that left nearly 50 academics deemed "at risk" of redundancy.

A UCU spokesman said the union was concerned that the regime "will have the same results in terms of what we regard as targeting people for redundancy". He said the union was insisting on the right to negotiate over changes to how its members were appraised, and he disputed the need for a performance management regime separate from existing policies to address underperformance.

Queen Mary's management "keep sticking to the point that we are asking for a veto over what goes on in a conversation between a line manager and an individual, but we aren't", the spokesman said. …
