Doors Opening to Historic Sites This Weekend

Have you ever wondered what it looks like inside the fabulous St. Mary's Cathedral? Or the exquisite Mariaggi's Theme Suite Hotel? Or the macabre Vaughan Street Jail?
This weekend is your chance to find out.
Heritage Winnipeg is hosting the 10th annual Doors Open Winnipeg, a free event Saturday and Sunday featuring 81 historic buildings and sites around the city. There are 13 new sites on the list including St. Mary's Cathedral at 353 St. Mary Ave. which was dedicated as St. Mary's Church in 1887.
"All those buildings that seemed mysterious to you, the doors are open to you this weekend only," Heritage Winnipeg president and local artist, Jordan Van Sewell, said at a press conference Wednesday.
Guided tours will be available in some of the buildings and sites.
Van Sewell said the two-day event is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse inside or around places people might not normally have access to or the opportunity to visit.
"The Vaughan Street Jail, for instance, it was closed for all those years. There was a hanging there. The place is full of ghosts," Van Sewell said. …
