During my year as president of NSDC, I want to challenge you to use that you already know in order to make a difference in learning and to move our profession to a place where no one has gone before. I have four requests of you for work we can do together even though we do not all work together in the same office.

Request 1: Develop a stretch goal, based on sound research, that, when achieved, will be something you never thought you could do.

Make this goal so big that it will require you to have sustained and rigorous professional development to achieve it. Write it down - that will increase the chances that you will work on it.

Request 2: Surround yourself professionally with a Circle of Growth for Learning.

Our thinking can be challenged and our conversations enriched when we are in a growth environment. Just as the size of an aquarium in which they live limits the growth of tropical fish, our environment determines our growth.

Do a mental evaluation of yourself and how you have grown professionally to date. Give yourself a number to represent that growth on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high). If you're a 7, for example, surround yourself with 8s, 9s, and 10s. These people can help you move along your growth curve by engaging you in stimulating conversation about books and concepts. Remember, we're trying to grow individually so that we can collectively make progress.

Request 3: Make a "stop doing" list.

Don't confuse activity with accomplishment. …
