BATES DANCE FESTIVAL'S
THREE-WEEK PROFESSIONALTRAINING PROGRAM
Now in its 21st season, the renowned Bates Dance Festival will host performances by top contemporary dance companies at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine July 19-August 16. Beginning July 26, the festival will hold its Three-Week Professional Training Program, a multidisciplinary summer intensive for dance educators seeking up-to-date perspectives and new training ideas.
According to Director Laura Faure, teachers design their own programs at Bates, selecting from different levels of over 30 dance and movement classes, including modern, Pilates, jazz and ballet, in addition to courses such as The Singing Body.
Educators also participate in informal discussions with fellow teachers as part of a dance education roundtable. In addition, Bates faculty members lead a Dance In The K-12 Curriculum workshop and participants have the opportunity to watch the festival's performances. This summer, master teacher Jaclynn Villamil will offer a new course in dance pedagogy, focusing on innovative approaches to dance training.
More than 30 secondary school and college dance educators from the U.S. and abroad attend Bates' program each summer. "Bates provides participants with a diversity of perspectives on dance training to enrich their careers as dance educators," Faure explains. Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter High School
I found the faculty to be some of the most innovative and accessible teachers and artists working today. The intellectual and physical infusion of dance I received has been an invaluable source not only for myself but for my students as well.
I left the festival rejuvenated and full of new insight about my teaching. Bates is a unique and diverse program from which all dance teachers could benefit. I have already recommended it to several colleagues.
