Implementing Positive Values in Organizations and Education for Better Living

Beginning from neonatal stage an individual is continuously exposed to the importance of imbibing positive values and applying them in one's life. During infancy, childhood and adolescence, parents and significant others emphasize on practicing positive values by the child. The parents explicitly and implicitly teach the child using parables where necessary and teachers teach them at school the best they can. Even in movies and cartoons people appreciate or like the character that has exhibited positive values. In the society too they are specific institutions that punish bad behavior and thus aid in following positive values. The tremendous emphasis on positive values in the society from time immemorial, show that they are essential for contented living.

Sri Satya Sai Baba who is well known for propagating the five cardinal values of Sanathana Dhrama opines that, "Whoever tries to understand the Human Values of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love and non-violence properly, who practices these values and propagates them with zeal and sincerity can alone be described as a truly educated person" (Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Lecture on 24th March 1958). According to Indian Philosophical texts practice of any one of the five human values can bring changes in all spheres of life. Patanjali Yoga Sutras documents how practice of any one value can bring excellence. Swami Sivananda explained in detail the benefits of practicing the value of Ahimsa which has been excelled by Mahatma Gandhi. He states that non-violence is a most effective master-method to counteract and eradicate completely the brutal, cruel traits of the individual (Sivananda, 2008).

Practicing positive values is imperative for happy and successful living. A person known for positive values is liked and respected not only by the family but also by peers and colleagues. Sometimes we may not like that person to be rigid in following them with others and in other cases, but in our case we benefit a lot from that person's practice of positive values. For instance, we may not like our father to be generous with beggars but we wish him to be so with us by 'giving' whenever we ask which is rather ironical. Whatever the case might be we still appreciate the strength of a positive value in others. In our own case, we feel joy and bliss by practice of positive values. The behavior of our significant others, peers and friends also is encouraging towards us since we are nice and 'good' towards them. The advent of the technological era led to erosion of positive values to some extent in the society. The negative impact of this was felt in many sectors. Today efforts are being made to introduce once again the positive values in crucial areas like education and in oiganizations. This paperpresents some successful projects in this direction.

Categorization of values

Important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable according to Business Dictionary (www.businessdictionary.com). Some of the Good/Positive Values are: honesty, integrity, truthfulness, humility, kindness, service, compassion, cooperation, team spirit, sympathy, empathy, selflessness, sincerity, patience, forgiveness, friendliness, cheerfulness, helpfulness, openness, democratic attitude, autonomy, respect, regard, affection, love, support, camaraderie, trust, loyalty, gratitude, discipline, decorum, self restraint, concern for others, self-reliance and others. Competence, character, commitment, culture, concern for others, compassion, common-sense, conviction, courage, confidence, courtesy, conduct, calmness, camaraderie, creativity, etc., are the positive values one should cherish to succeed in life (Prasad, 2012).
