Nathaniel Branden in 1969 briefly defined self-esteem as "...the experience of being competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and being worthy of happiness". Physical exercise is bodily activity that develops or maintains physical fitness and overall health. It is often practiced to strengthen muscles and the cardiovascular system, and to hone athletic skills.Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system, and helps prevent diseases of affluence such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. It also improves mental health and helps prevent depress ion.

Generally, the co-relational research examining self-esteem has shown a relation between self-esteem and the probability of engaging in exercise and maintaining an exercise program. The presence of high self-esteem or self-efficacy beliefs has been demonstrated to be factors in determining whether an individual will elect to participate in an exercise program.In contrast, research with adolescents with low self-esteem shows tendencies to under-eating and over-eating with less likelihood of physical activity.

With respect to adults, studies utilizing the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP) successfully demonstrated that positive physical selfworth showed a relationship between global self-esteem and the subdomain levels of sport confidence, physical conditioning, attractive body image, and strength. Finally, the co-relational studies show that there appears to be a lack of relation between exercise and self-esteem for individuals who do not view exercise as essential. Also, not all research demonstrated a co-relational effect between exercise and selfesteem; for instance, Aine and Lester (1995) found no effect on a selfreport questionnaire examining regular exercise and amount of exercise in students. The individuals who have belief in specific competencies are more likely to engage in exercise and then experience success which increases their likelihood of continuing exercise. In addition, exercise is likely to increase self-esteem. These findings are fairly consistent across different age ranges and length of exercise programs as well as intensity of exercise.

The relation of the co-relational studies indicating that high selfesteem individuals are more likely to participate in exercise and the experimental studies showing improved self-esteem from exercise implementation can be understood through Bandura's (1977) concept of reciprocal determinism. This theory indicates that behavior, personality, and environment interact together to determine personality and behavior. Thus, the personality trait of positive selfregard leads to the adaptation of exercise behavior. Engaging in the behavior of exercise, in turn, leads to greater positive self-regard; thus, they impact on one another is a reciprocal fashion.

Overall, the connection between self-esteem and exercise has been fairly established although, as identified above, there are specific issues that need to be more clearly defined and more rigorous experimental research need to be conducted. Hence , the researcher is interested to study the self esteem of college youth those who excercise and those who don't excercise. The researcher in the present research aims to make a comparative Study on Self Esteem of College Youth who exercise and who don't exercise.

Objectives of the study

To compare the total self esteem between college youth who exercise and those who don't.

* To compare the total self esteem between college boys and girls who exercise

* To compare the total self esteem between college boys and girls who don't exercise

* To study the total self esteem between college youth who exercise due to compulsion and those who exercise due to personal choice
