Futurist and social architect Barbara Marx Hubbard challenges us to grow beyond the human potential movement and into a broader sphere of sensibility and responsibility in Conscious Evolution: Awakening the Power of Our Social Potential. Consider a "social potential movement" made possible by people the world over who have independently concluded that history need not errantly repeat itself--for the first time historically, we have the opportunity to select a future in accordance with inclusive and humane values as opposed to propagating exclusive values which have apparently served only a percentage of the population. To that end, Hubbard states that the purpose of this book is to "discover a peaceful passageway through the labyrinth of modern society, to carry us from here to there, to unearth a design of evolution for a gentle birth, to formulate a spiritmotivated plan of action" and "to cooperate with the tendency in evolution for higher consciousness and greater freedom through more complex or synergistic order." She implores our educational systems to create the intellectual basis for transformative education by which we could foster our creativity and free ourselves from the historically and sociologically complicated issues of hunger, disease, ignorance and war.
The author presents a particularly intriguing point as she refers to societal change through agents known as "cultural creatives"--a subgroup of the population which is defined by an environmentally and socially-aware set of values. …
