Invite 54 affiliate president-elects and a host of section and division chair-elects to a beautiful fall weekend in Alexandria/Washington D.C., and you have the formula for a fabulous meeting of AAFCS future leaders. These are indeed the participants who attended the 1998 AAFCS Fall Leadership Conference at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City this past October 1998. More than 87 AAFCS members, AAFCS Board members, and AAFCS headquarters staff met for three days of intense training, team building, and just great fun. We studied the Spirit of Leadership, taking our direction from the 1993 Scottsdale Conference and the mission set forth during that meeting. We remembered the Lake Placid Conference and the course that the visionaries set for us nearly 90 years ago. Participants spent time reflecting on leadership skills they already possessed and then explored those they could cultivate and learn to improve upon as they move toward greater leadership responsibilities with the organization.
As always, the members who visited AAFCS Headquarters for the first time were somewhat awestruck by the displays and exhibits in the Ellen Richards Room. Many participants felt proud as they viewed our beautiful headquarters building and the AAFCS offices. …
