Consumers get more than enough conflicting information about the safety or wholesomeness of various foods. No one wants more mixed messages.

A lot of us, try as we might, find it hard to stay entirely away from canned foods. They line shelves in stores, containing a range of products. We've heard concerns before about the presence of bisphenol A - often referred to simply as BPA - in the linings of cans, that the substance might compromise our health.

Now, a study conducted by six non-profit groups based in Canada and the United States shows that the majority of canned foods contain this chemical, a result of it leaching into contents.

So, do we panic? Not everyone agrees whether BPA carries any health risk. At the same time, when there are other options, why do we as consumers tolerate any level of risk? Common as it might be, Health Canada states that BPA in food packaging is not a health risk to people, even to newborns and children. The European Food Safety Agency also deems it a low risk.

Health advocacy organizations don't see it that way, with some saying even exposure in small amounts has been linked to increased risk of some forms of cancer, type 2 diabetes, asthma, infertility and other health problems. …
