Faculty Member Transitioning into the Advanced Practice Role

The advanced practice nurse role has been expanding since the 60's. Today, the graduate level practitioner functions in many specialty area. Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing is developing a graduate nursing program. In preparation for the program, I am one of several College of Nursing faculty members who are retooling their skills and engaging in faculty practice.
With the expanded roles of advanced practice nursing there are many definitions of what constitute faculty practice. Teaching, service, joint appointments and other forms of practice are included in this definition. Transitioning the role of teaching to include faculty practice is dynamic. There are no set rules for establishing and/or engaging in faculty practice. Likewise, implementing advanced faculty practice roles varies according to individual and institutional needs. There is no "one size fits all" for the advanced practice role nor for faculty practice.
The Advanced practice nurse and the institution must allow time to make smooth transitions with minimal anxiety. Time management and suitable practice sites are necessary criteria to help ease the transitional phase. …
