Excellent Resource for Externalizing Behaviors DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR DISORDERS: evidencebased practice for Assessment and intervention By F. M. Gresham 2015, Guilford Press

Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) is an excellent resource for educational professionals, especially for school psychologists who are critical members of the assessment and intervention teams for students who exhibit problematic externalizing behavior. Gresham clearly indicates that the developmental trajectory for these students and their prognosis is bleak if the behaviors manifest early in life. However, with evidencebased strategies and the involvement of parents, research indicates that 75% of these families can be helped to change the coercive behavior patterns that are maintained by negative reinforcement patterns. Undoubtedly, conceptualizing DBDs in an ecological framework is essential. Gresham provides detailed descriptions of the components of applied behavior analysis and social learning theory that comprise evidence-based intervention strategies for this population.

Chapter 1 begins with an overview of DBDs including their characteristics, correlates, causes, and outcomes. This is followed by key issues in evaluating, selecting, and implementing evidence-based practices in Chapter 2. Gresham discusses threats to internal and external validity as well as the single-case experimental designs and the criteria for an intervention to be considered evidence-based. Then evidence-based assessment strategies are detailed in Chapter 3, which highlights risk and protective factors, screening tools, behavior rating scales, and functional behavior assessment. …
