Six Magazines Submitted Stories for Ad Credit


Taking a page from the television networks, at least six magazines submitted anti-drug articles to the Office of National Drug Control Policy in order to get credits under a federal advertising program that has benefited the networks, Salon reported on March 31.

If the magazines' articles promoted the message the drug czar's office wanted, the magazines were able to fulfill some of their advertising requirements. The articles were not reviewed before publication, but were submitted to the drug czar's office afterward.

U.S. News & World Report, Sporting News, Family Circle, Seventeen, Parade and USA Weekend submitted editorial content to qualify as a substitute for advertising pages owed the government under advertising contracts, the magazine reported.

Executives at all six magazines confirmed the relationship with the drug office in interviews with Salon. …
