MIDLAND.... A painter, muralist, illustrator, and author, Texas artist Tom Lea [1908-2001] portrayed the beauty of the American Southwest and its inhabitants. Although he was a living legend in the Lone Star State by age 50, Lea was largely unknown beyond Texas. A major retrospective of his work is on display at the Museum of the Southwest through March 13. The exhibition includes paintings, works on paper, photo panels, posters, and more in a thorough exploration of the artist's life and career. Born in El Paso, Lea studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was an apprentice to 1920s muralist John Warner Norton. During the Great Depression, Lea painted murals for the Works Progress Administration. He illustrated books, served as a war correspondent, and wrote novels before committing his creative talents once again to painting beginning in the early 1970s.
