TORONTO - Environment Canada says much of southern Ontario is expected to get hit by an icy weather system this weekend.
The weather agency is warning that periods of rain starting Friday could change into freezing rain by Saturday morning as cooler temperatures set in. The area covered by the warning stretches from Sarnia all the way east to Kingston.
Freezing rain may become mixed with or turn over to ice pellets at times in some areas, and Environment Canada says some snow is possible, especially in the Belleville to Kingston areas.
The forecasted weather has prompted airlines to warn travellers to brace for delays and cancellations, while power companies have said they are ready to respond to outages.
Environment Canada says freezing rain is expected to end for a few hours Saturday evening, but is expected to move back in Sunday.
The agency says ice build up of 10 to 20 millimetres appears likely across the region by Sunday morning, adding that it will be less in areas close to Lake Ontario.
"Dangerous winter driving conditions are expected on untreated roads Saturday and Sunday," Environment Canada said in a weather warning Friday. …
