Aliquippa's M.J. Devonshire and Penn Hills' Daequan Hardy were named the Post-Gazette co-players of the year a few weeks ago.

But the reputations of Devonshire and Hardy stretched across the state.

The final three Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State Teams were released Friday and Devonshire and Hardy were selected player of the year for their respective classifications. Devonshire won the award for Class 3A while Hardy was named 5A.

The two who coached Devonshire and Hardy also won awards. Aliquippa's Mike Warfield was named Pennsylvania 3A coach of the year after guiding the Quips to WPIAL and PIAA titles in his first year on the job. Penn Hills' Jon LeDonne was tabbed the 5A coach of the year after the Indians also won WPIAL and PIAA titles.

As for Hardy and Devonshire, they are similar players who had similar seasons. Hardy is a senior who played receiver, defensive back and returned kicks. He had a spectacular game in the PIAA championship when he scored four touchdowns three ways - two pass receptions, an 84-yard kickoff return and a 100-yard interception return. He had three interceptions in the game.

Devonshire also was a big-play receiver and kick returner for the Quips. Devonshire had eight interceptions on defense and he returned eight punts for touchdowns, one short of the national record. He averaged 21.2 yards on 27 receptions and also rushed for 327 yards. He scored 24 touchdowns and the average length of those scores was 42.2 yards.

The Class 1A, 3A and 5A all-state teams were released Friday, and Devonshire was one of six Aliquippa players to make the 3A squad.

Penn Hills was next with four.

Besides Devonshire, the other five Aliquippa players selected were quarterback Eli Kosanovich, running back Avante McKenzie, receiver Will Gipson (Pitt recruit), defensive lineman Solvauhn Moreland (Ball State) and defensive lineman Elijah Mike.

Overall, the WPIAL had eight players on the 3A all-state team. The others were Derry linebacker Dom DeLuca and Beaver Falls quarterback-defensive back Daylin Bricker, who made it under the "athlete" category. …
