Nigerian election is delayed

Nigeria's electoral commission has delayed the presidential election until Feb. 23 amid ongoing violence. The nation's election had been scheduled for Saturday.

Authorities in Nigeria's Kaduna state reported at least 66 deaths this week. Samuel Aruwan, a spokesman for Kaduna state's governor, said Friday that the victims include 22 children.

He blamed a "criminal element" for the deaths in the Kajuru area.

One resident blamed the killings on fighting between Christian farmers and Fulani Muslim herdsmen. Deadly clashes between the two communities have erupted in southern Kaduna as the groups compete for land and water.

Britain urged to help bring Islamic State teen home - The family of a pregnant British teenager who ran away to join the Islamic State group urged the government Friday to help bring her home.

Shamima Begum's family issued a statement appealing for government assistance. Begum, now 19, resurfaced this week at a refugee camp in Syria where she gave an interview to the Times of London saying she didn't regret her decision but wanted to come home.

Begum was one of a group of schoolgirls from London who went to Syria to marry Islamic State fighters in 2015 at a time when the group lured impressionable young people to its self-proclaimed caliphate.

Begum's apparent lack of remorse has triggered criticism from many who believe her decision makes her a pariah in Britain.

Russian police question nerve agent scientist - A Russian scientist who says he developed a nerve agent suspected to have been used against a Russian ex-agent and his daughter says he's been questioned by police after flyers appeared in his home city accusing him of pedophilia.

Vladimir Uglev said that police had taken fingerprints from him Friday and that officers had searched his computer and home in Anapa. He denies the pedophilia accusations and said no charges had been filed.

Uglev claimed to have synthesized a deadly liquid in 1975 that Britain says poisoned Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Britain last year. …
