The Functions of Poetry1

Poetry is one of the arts. Any art functions in two ways, either in and for itself, or as the means to an end defined by some other subject or science.

It is a characteristic of the arts when they function in and for themselves that they are concerned with immediately experienced materials. This is especially evident in the case of painting. In conveying color and form the painter places before us the immediately experienceable blues and reds and greens. It is true, also, of music. The composer may work with black marks arranged on horizontal bars ordered at intervals much after the manner of the symbols of the mathematician. Yet he would hardly be called an artist were not the symbolic form of his score embodied in and presented with the sensuous content of the immediately heard sounds at the symphony concert.

Literature, in the form either of written poetry or prose, may seem upon first thought to be an exception to this rule. When the literary masterpieces are not read aloud the artist has presented merely the symbols on the page and not the actual people or elements of experience to which the symbols refer. A closer examination of his artistry will indicate, however, that he achieves the status of an artist only if, by means of these symbols, he succeeds in bringing into concrete vividness in the reader's imagination that which he purports to convey with all the freshness of color, the vital movement of the emotions, and the sensitivity of feeling which an immediate experience of the imagined subject matter, were it possible, would exhibit.

This becomes clear if we note the difference in the treatment of the same phenomenon, for example, a flowing brook, by the poet and by the scientist. The poet refers to it as the "babbling brook." If he achieves his purpose with us by his use of these words in the context of his verse,
