My purpose in writing this book is to enable every citizen -- every parent, teacher, and taxpayer -- to evaluate and improve his or her local schools, using my 25 years of management consulting experience to help you do so. This book contains everything you need to know, a complete do-it-yourself kit, to evaluate and improve your schools.
Democracy requires that citizens evaluate public services. In schools, this means that parents should be sure that they and their children are well served, taxpayers should be sure they are getting their money's worth, and teachers need to be able to reassure the public (and themselves) that good results justify budgets and salaries.
Everyone involved in schools -- teachers, administrators, board members, other staff, taxpayers, parents, and students -- needs a concept of school governance, management, and performance. This will help you organize your own commonsense perceptions and experience into effective action for improvement. You will have some idea of how to measure your school's performance; how to find out whether your school has a positive, supportive, participative, results-oriented management process or traditional authoritarian school administration; and how to see if your school board is setting policies of teamwork and success instead of the adversarial relationships, conflict, and decline into which many American school districts have fallen in the past few decades.
