Management: Positive Support for Teachers and Administrators
Policies and practices of school governance, management, and performance have a significant impact on results. How people are treated makes a big difference in their performance. Key management requirements are the following:
Board policies to encourage teamwork and accountability
Participative management to provide positive support for staff
Performance measures to focus on purpose and measure results.
These lessons of the behavioral sciences and applied psychology have their roots in the Renaissance, humanism, the Enlightenment and scientific method. They helped fuel America's national democracy and its industrial and agricultural revolutions. They are needed in the management of schools and public services, too.Communication, teamwork, trust, and confidence should replace conflict.
Unions have been a positive influence in raising teacher salaries, improving working conditions, and getting rid of traditional authoritarian administration. They should also seek effective management, to produce good performance and justify salaries and budgets, rather than just adversarial relationships.
School boards should encourage teamwork and accountability, through policies and behavior, avoiding both overinvolvement and "rubber stamp" extremes.
