Over the course of his adult career, from 1942 to 1975, Pasolini concentrated much of his journalistic and essaying activity in the following seven journals or cultural arenas, and this chapter examines in each of them particular rhetorical practices and ideological parameters of self- expression:
1. The journals of fascist youth organisations, 1942-3.
2. The cultural and regional politics of Friuli, 1943-9.
3. Officina, 1955-9.
4. Vie nuove, 1960-5.
5. Nuovi argomenti, 1966-75.
6. Tempo illustrato, 1968-70.
7. Corriere della sera (and others), 1973-5.1

2.1. The Journals of Facist Youth Organizations, 1942-3

Pasolini's involvement in two Bolognese student periodicals, Architrave and Il Setaccio, organized by GUF and GIL respectively, was relatively limited, although he was officially 'vice consulente' (vice consultant) of the latter and enthusiastically supported the group of students who produced it. The journals were two of a large number of similar small- scale operations which characterized a late flourishing of youth culture encouraged by the fascist government, and in particular by the Minister

See e.g. Portico della morte for a selection of such articles from 1942 to 1971. Several journals were regular, long-term collaborators: La fiera letteraria, from a May 1947 article, "'L'ispirazione nei contemporanei'" to a November 1974 interview, "'Questo cinema scellerato'"; Paragone, which published poems from 'L'Appennino' (now in B1, 175-84) to "'Il mondo salvato dai ragazzini"' ( B1, 860-78), and his ill-fated attempts at Dante criticism in 1965-6 (later in EE85-125; see Garboli, 1965; Magrini, 1986; Segre, 1965); and Rinascita, which was the arena for an important debate on the 'questione della lingua', prompted by Pasolini article "'Nuove questioni linguistiche'" (see Cadioli, 1985, 15-107; Segre, 1966). In 1974, he even had a short-lived film-review column with Italian Playboy.
