James Axtell, the recipient of a B.A. degree from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, has also studied at Oxford University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. Mr. Axtell has taught history at Yale and is currently Associate Professor of Anglo- American History at Sarah Lawrence College. He is on the editorial board of History of Education Quarterly and has been a consultant to the American Council of Learned Societies. He has published several articles and reviews and is the author of a forthcoming book, The School upon a Hill: Education and Society in Colonial New England.
