As educators, we both are greatly influenced by the "talking books" of Paulo Freire. We Made the Road by Talking: Conversations on Education and Social Change, which Freire wrote with Myles Horton ( 1990), inspired the format of this chapter. What follows is our own "talking book." We have summarized our conversations as we prepared for and actually taught this class, which we see as a dynamic synergism between service-learning and multicultural education.
Since 1988, I have directed programming in Project Community, an innovative partnership between the School of Education, Department of Sociology, and the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Michigan. Project Community is one of the nation's oldest servicelearning courses, awarding credit since the early 1970s to students who integrate academic theory with community service. 1____________________
