accelerated by the intersection of the two paradigms of service-learning and multicultural education. Both fields unite key leadership concepts and place particular emphasis on social reconstructivist leadership. Both fields focus on the practical and the philosophical, and both are aimed at helping undergraduate students locate their sense of citizenship and responsibility.
But even as we advance a new vision of leadership that forges a stronger, more prominent integration between service-learning and multicultural education, we caution against programs that lack quality and depth and stagnate on the border of doing nice things to help those people around those issues. Our task is to challenge our colleagues in higher education, service-learning, and multicultural education to think about how the integration of service-learning and multicultural education can be used to build the personal leadership capacities of all students and facilitate quality learning experiences. As we ask you to consider the realities of this integration, we leave you with a reflection offered by one of the White female respondents:
We need leaders in every field of work who have the skills, traits, and attitudes of transformational leadership. This will only occur if they have opportunities or experience a sense of voice and servant leadership when they are young. The more they feel a positive connection to their communities and a sense of themselves as contributors, the more apt they are to continue contributing. The more they see the assets of their communities and the worth of all people, the more likely they will honor the dignity of all that they meet. As we grow technologically, it is critical that we balance this with an expansion of the heart and the wisdom needed for leadership in the 21st century.
