This volume presents contributions made at The University of Iowa's biennial symposia on Learning and Memory: The Behavioral and Biological Substrates. Initiation of the symposium was made possible by Professor John H. Harvey's (Chair, Department of Psychology, 1986-1989) leadership and sustained efforts in obtaining the financial support of the College of Liberal Arts ( Professor Gerhard Loewenberg, Dean). Additional support was generously provided by the College of Medicine ( Dean John W. Eckstein), through the Departments of Pharmacology ( Professor P. Michael Conn, Head) and Physiology and Biophysics ( Professor Robert E. Fellows, Head). Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the support of the Neuroscience Program ( Professor Joe D. Coulter, Chair).
It is proper also to acknowledge that the success of the symposia depended upon the capable assistance of several staff members at The University of Iowa: most noteworthy, Ms. Terry Powell, Program Associate, Conferences and Institutes, Ms. Jean Jensen, Ms. Pamela Young, and Mr. André Mallie. In addition, we acknowledge the air transportation arrangements for participants provided by Travel Concepts, Iowa City, IA.
