FOREWORD

One gets two reactions when you know Sam and Bella Spewack; and the two reactions are to love them or to kill them. Finally, love transcends murder, and you go through arguing for four weeks and then you get Spring Song on the stage.

Spring Song was not very successful in the theatre-- why, I shall never understand. I always thought it was one of the finest plays ever written, and I will always think so. I know it's true because I have known the people in it all my life. I was born and raised with them. I am afraid most of the first night audience were also raised with them but wanted to forget them.

I hope everyone who buys the book will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed producing the play.
