Homophobia in Gays and Lesbians
Gay bashing is not confined to straights. Gays and lesbians bash both themselves and other gays and lesbians. For example, one lesbian noted how her sisters kept gay men out of lesbian bars, and one gay man complained about gay men who "outed" other gay men to embarrass them or destroy their careers.
William W. Meissner( 1985) defines inhibition, one reason for celibacy, as "an unconsciously determined limitation or renunciation of specific ego functions, singly or in combination, to avoid anxiety arising out of conflict with instinctual impulses, superego, or environmental forces or figures" (p. 389). This definition applies to gays and lesbians who selfcloset, renouncing homosexual relationships/homosexuality to avoid accepting themselves as they are, as a way to win a struggle they are having with themselves about being gay.
According to Samuel Hynes' ( 1994) book review of a biography of E.M. Forster, the novelist "came to realize he was a homosexual, but saw his condition only as a crippling and isolating misfortune; . . . he had no full sexual experience until he was in his late 30s, and even after that lived a nearly celibate life for many years . . . until he was 45, just at the point where his novel writing ended" (p. 7).
