Recent philosophy has developed a most unfortunate fear of other-worldliness. It is the function of art as the vision of beauty, and of religion as the vision of sublimity, to lift us above the dead actualities to the realization of higher or wider possibilities. Theoretic science and philosophy fulfill the same function, but must take care to do so by rigorous logical technique that shows the actual included in the possible, and the possible as a logical extension of the actual. Logic as the exploration of the field of possibility is thus the life-blood of philosophy, and also that which keeps it from disintegrating into arbitrary opinions.
Philosophical vision or contemplation is a most vital and strenuous intellectual activity, if carried on under the exacting rules of logical technique. It is worthy of our utmost devotion.
