Collecting and Analyzing Naturalistic Data: An Integrated Activity

To understand a situation, event, or activity from the perspective of the participant, naturalistic researchers have used a variety of techniques. Although these techniques are rigorous and empirical, aimed at as full an understanding of the situation under study as possible, researchers have successfully combined existing techniques and created new ones as they try to understand the way people experience specific events in their everyday lives. This chapter provides an overview of four ways in which naturalistic data is collected: participant observation, unstructured interview, cultural informants, and personal documents. Since analysis of naturalistic data combines with and gives direction to further data collection, methods of analyzing initial data and suggestions for its use in collecting further data are also discussed.


THE BASIC TECHNIQUES OF NATURALISTIC INQUIRY

Observation, interview, and personal documents are the basic tools by which naturalistic researchers gather data. The boundaries of naturalistic data-gathering are, however, constantly expanding as researchers seek new ways to answer their questions. Photographs, those which already exist and those produced by or for researchers, are being used as a source of naturalistic data. Motion pictures and videotapes provide supplementary information by allowing a wide variety of experts to observe and comment on various types of behavior. Archival documents, familiar to librarians as materials to collect and organize, are often rich sources of information, both personal and official.
