Advice to a Student on Achieving in School

Let's say a student decides to become more successful in school and asks me for advice on how to go about it. What would I tell this person? For starters, I'd tell the student what is in this essay. Several high school students who have been having problems in their classes read what I have written here and discussed it with me. I was encouraged; they got through it, understood what I was saying, and reported they found it useful. See what you think. Probably this essay will be of most use to you as a frame of reference to consider in the course of developing your own views on how a student goes about turning it around in school. Perhaps to some extent it can guide your overall posture toward students' responsibility in the classroom, give direction to informal exchanges you have with students, and be something you keep in mind in a general way as you set up assignments, establish classroom procedures, and develop programs.


TO THE STUDENT

So you have chosen to do better in your classes. My advice to you is to:

Be There. What you most need is in the classroom. That's where the growth and learning and success are for you. The classroom is your playing field. If you are going to win, you have to show up for the game. Don't run from it. Don't hide. Take on the challenge. Attend class: today, tomorrow, every day. There are going to be times when everything inside you tells you not to go to class. Your mind says, "Why go?" Your feelings and your body
