Teaching Values: The Later Years

In the essay "Teaching Values: The Early Years," I took you through some of my own intellectual history, focusing on how my university experiences influenced my thinking about values in the classroom. To summmarize that writing, my encounters with liberal arts and teacher education courses contributed to shaping my commitment to put students in essentially a decision-making posture regarding values concerns. I wanted students, operating with as much autonomy as I could provide them, to clarify their value allegiances and to resolve in their minds major values issues confronting them and society. I refer you back to that previous essay for details. In these pages, I pick up the story from where I left off in that essay and outline some ways I have extended and altered my views on values teaching over my years in education. Understand as you read this that I could provide a parallel discussion dealing with any other aspect of teaching. I just happen to be talking about values here. To be a teacher is to continually re-think one's purposes and practices in every dimension of one's work.


THE NEED TO DEFINE TERMS

As time went along, I became increasingly aware that I wasn't clear about the differences between values and morals and ethics, where personal character fit in, and how any of these phenomena were related to one another. I found that the professional literature didn't stop and define the
