The Supreme Court decision of 1954 didn't give us school integration in Tuscumbia, it gave us school elimination. It eliminated the black schools and forced the black children to go to the white school. . . . Nobody in the school who is sympathetic to them [black students]. . . . Nobody to point out to them in school the value of continuing school. (Long, 1981)
