Methodology

PURPOSE OF STUDY
This book is based on a research project for which data were collected over a period of several years. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors that teachers, school administrators, students, and community members perceived as contributing to making their school a good school. This was a case study of a segregated school for African American children that was operated in a small town in northwest Alabama, from 1877 to 1969. Data were also collected to determine the impact of desegregation in the African American School community from 1965 to 1980.
METHODS, TECHNIQUES, AND DATA SOURCES

Research Questions
The following research questions were addressed in the study:
1. What were the factors that the school community perceived as contributing to making their school a good school?
2. What kinds of educational experiences did teachers and principals view as important for the successful education of African American children?
3. How did the school interact with parents and the community?
4. How did the educational environment change when the segregated school was closed and African American children began attending the newly desegregated school?
