Chapter 11
Working with First-time Cooperating Teachers

We forget what it is like to be fifteen. Yet when we pause for a moment, we can conjure up those memories. The same is true for our student teaching experience. Many times each term, university supervisors need to remind themselves and cooperating teachers what it is like to be a student teacher.

Student teachers have not changed. They still want to do a good job, do not want to fail, and are concerned about the impressions they are making. They continue to want to develop habits and attitudes that lead to growth.

Like us, when we student taught, they face sensory overload. They wonder if they will make a fool of themselves, if students will understand what they are presenting, if they will need to make a 180-degree turn because of students' expectations, and if they will be looked upon as a "real" teacher. There are so many things for them to think about. "How will my students react to me?" "Will I have control?" "Will students respect me?"

All at the same time, they feel excitement, discomfort, fear, uncertainty, and eagerness. They are between the roles of being a teacher and a student teacher, and they believe that their cooperating teacher will be standing there double checking, ready to override them.
