alte Wien . Old Vienna. Although more properly referring to Franz Josef's era, the younger generation of interbellum Vienna applied the term derisively to the values, manners, and beliefs of their elders.
die Anhängern . Followers, disciples, or fans. The word is sometimes used sarcastically since it literally means persons who hang on to or cling to another.
der Anschluss . Usually translated annexation. The term gained particular importance when it was used to describe (and justify) the takeover of Austria by the Germans in 1938.
Arbeiter Zeitung . The Workers Newspaper, the organ of the Austro-Marxists. The English-language Socialist paper was called the Daily Worker.
die Arbeitsgemeinschaft . A work team or a commune of workers. It was in the latter sense that it was applied to Lili Roubiczek [Peller] and her teenage followers, who established the first official Montessori school in Vienna.
der Arzt . Physician. Many of Vienna's most important psychologists obtained the medical degree; the courses in physiology and neuropathology were taught at the medical school.
der Aspirant . Intern. A medical aspirant in Vienna had many of the same duties as a contemporary American intern, but the staff of the university clinics and hospitals usually took the teaching function more seriously. A resident in medicine was a Sekundararzt.
