O

O'NEAL, FREDERICK ( 1905- ). O'Neal, one of the founders of the American Negro Theatre,* hails from Saint Louis. After several appearances with this group, he moved to Broadway in a supporting role (Frank) in Anna Lucasta* ( 1944), for which he received a Clarence Derwent Award and the New York Critics Circle Award. After additional appearances throughout the world, he appeared in such Hollywood films as Pinky ( 1949), Something of Value ( 1957), Anna Lucasta ( 1959), Take a Giant Step* ( 1961), and The Sins of Rachel Cade ( 1961).

O'NEAL, RON ( 1937- ). O'Neal received instant fame as "Super Fly" in the 1972 film, but he had begun his acting career years earlier on the stage. Trained at the Karamu Theatre in Cleveland, he made his Off-Broadway debut in American Pastoral in 1968. He turned down a role in Ceremonies in Dark Old Men* for No Place to Be Somebody* ( 1969), which won him four major acting awards (Drama Desk, Theatre World, Clarence Derwent, and Obie).

PERRY, SHAUNEILLE ( 1930- ). Perry attended Howard University and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago for her dramatic training. After a brief acting career ( The Goose [ 1960] and Clandestine on the Morning Line [ 1961]), she turned to directing with Rosalee Pritchett* ( 1971). She also cowrote the book for Daddy Goodness,* a 1979 musical that closed before reaching Broadway. Her latest work, Things of the Heart: Marian Anderson's Story, was produced by the New Federal Theatre in January 1981.
