Reflecting on my involvement on a national and international level, I have come to realize that my passion for equity in higher education is sustained by my working alongside others. This occurs not only with individuals on campus but also with colleagues I have met in professional organizations. Thinking back I recognize that this aspect of our careers as faculty in higher education was never discussed in the classroom. Yet experience has demonstrated to me that "work in the sense of a calling can never merely be private" ( Bellah 1985, 66). How did I get where I am? Where did it all begin? Contemplating on my career over the last twelve years, I begin to tick off examples of my involvement in professional organizations: Chairperson of the editorial board of the Journal of Higher Education, editorial board member of the Journal of College Student Development and Journal of General Education, past president of the American Association of University Administrators, on the slate for presidency of the Association for the Study of Higher Education,
