Outpatient Treatment of Sex and Love Addicts

We then can use what we subjectively think is the best available therapy in an effort to produce a change -- to improve the quality of life for that individual and all those who care about him or her, and to improve society.

I propose that behavior addiction be added to the Diagnostic Manual, using all the parameters for substance dependence but replacing "substance" by a specific behavior -- sex, gambling, or eating. An additional requirement would be that the individual be free of any substance abuse, dependence, and/or addiction for a minimum period of time -- as little as 3 months but preferably 6 to 12 months. An evaluation of all exogenous chemicals for any possible neurotropic effects is also needed.
