outgroup members vary considerably, which should lead to more differentiated perceptions of the outgroup.
In summary, we suggest that the integrated threat theory of prejudice is useful because it provides knowledge about the causes of prejudice, makes it possible to understand which types of threat are operative in a given situation involving specific groups of people, and provides insight into the specific techniques of improving intergroup relations that may be most effective in reducing particular types of threats.
