Acknowledgments

This book owes much of its inspiration and support to Robert White, S.J., of the Centre for the Study of Communication and Culture in London. He and the Centre initiated the proposal and provided substantial early funding. Other financial support came from the National Association of Broadcasters, plus modest grants from the Research and Grants Committees of both The University of Alabama and its College of Communication. Graduate student assistance was provided at times by the University of Southern California and The University of Alabama. Mary Williams and Tom Waldman assisted in California, Curtis Love in Alabama. Paul Kenney, S.J., of the Centre in London gathered data from Europe.
