Projects by Individuals: Collaborative and Independent

Individual persons have always been in the forefront of most major innovations in society, including education and media. Their professional work has often involved institutions with which they collaborated or to which their media explorations were applied. At other times they have been individual entrepreneurs.

Among such figures important in media literacy training in the United States have been Aimee Dorr, Dorothy and Jerome Singer, Rosemary Potter, and private business persons who have harnessed their awareness of media's significance with ventures in publication. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 report their activities in developing systematic training for critical viewing skills.


AIMEE DORR ET AL. (HARVARD/UNIV. OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA)

Representative of scholars who conducted formal experimental study of teaching media literacy were Dr. Aimee Dorr and her associates at various universities. Her earliest formal study, conducted in Boston from 1974 to 1976 (supported by a grant from the Office of Child Development), was similar in scope, participants, and results to the Singers' projects at Yale University in 1978 and thereafter ( Dorr, Graves, & Phelps, 1980).
