construct. The two levels of the AS hierarchy should be viewed as complementary phenomena because the general variance representing the second-order, unitary AS construct co-exists with the more specific variance representing more differentiated facets of AS at the first-order level. Researchers and clinicians alike would do well to keep the distinction between the two levels of the hierarchy in mind. Teasing apart the contributions of the two levels of the hierarchy to AS--related phenomena should facilitate the clarification of theoretical relations in this area and has the potential to assist in clinical assessment.
