designs may clarify whether NE and trait anxiety (in interaction with environmental factors and other personality traits) give rise to AS, as suggested by Lilienfeld et al. ( 1993), or whether AS and other traits give rise to NE and trait anxiety, as suggested by Reiss ( 1997).
The history of science teaches us that many of the most important advances in knowledge stem from the demonstration that constructs previously thought to be distinct or independent are in fact interrelated ( Bronowski, 1978; see also Ackerman, 1997). A better understanding of the relation of AS to the personality domain may provide important insights not only into how AS differs from other traits (e.g., trait anxiety, Absorption), but also into the underlying causal processes that mediate the covariation between AS and these traits. A better understanding of these processes may in turn provide important clues to the etiology of panic and other anxiety disorders.
