FEASIBILITY STUDY OF DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING SYSTEMS

An elaboration of distributed processing essentials in the prior chapter brings to the forefront the issue of decentralization versus centralization. Initially, in this chapter we shall examine this important aspect, with emphasis on decentralization of data processing tasks, i.e., distributed processing at the local and regional levels and centralization of those functions which cannot be handled efficiently and economically at the lower operating levels.

Next, we shall discuss important design criteria for distributed processing which are very important for determining the feasibility or nonfeasibility of going distributed. If distributed processing appears to be a viable alternative for current DP operations, a feasibility study is initiated in which feasible system alternatives are developed along with their specific savings, costs, and intangible benefits. An analysis of this information forms the basis for selecting the best distributed processing system. An integral part of the feasibility study is the evaluation of the equipment to be utilized in the new DP environment. The equipment selection process concludes the feasibility study--the final part of the chapter.
