Musical Nationalism: American Composers' Search for Identity

American cultures. Unable to assert their cosmopolitanism over Paris, New Yorkers and Bostonians had to take note of Faulkner, of Bellows, as well as of Harris, Thomson, Moore, Porter, and Hanson. Flaubert had implanted among Parisians the inherent pettiness of France's moeurs des provences. But Parisians could appreciate the mores of a foreign provincial and the vestiges of a foreign vernacular tradition. Americans found a home here, a home where they felt comfortable and creative. Here, to the consternation of both snobbish critcs and provincial vernacularists, rather than one single indentity, the variety of American culture could emerge.
